Muddy Boots at Whitmoor Common

Having published the Walkfest programme for this September, we thought that it would be a good opportunity to give our various walking groups the chance to contribute a “guest blog”.  What better way to start than with an offering from Jeanette and John Cattermole who run the Muddy Boots group and are hosting our launch event this year.

Hello – good to see you!

You wanted to know something about Whitmoor Common.  It’s a great place for a walk – there’s plenty to see and it’s good for recreation.

We have lived in Grange Park since 1973 and we have always enjoyed walking on the Common.  Jeanette and I have spent many happy hours walking around the area and I guess we have become quite used to finding our way over Jordan Hill, or spending time by Brooke Pond, or just enjoying the delights of the open areas.  You must come out with us some time – it will be worth the effort, and we will be able to show you some of the residents of the Common.

We lead a walking group called “Muddy Boots” and go out every Monday.  We have great times walking together – one of our number managed to get a boot stuck in the mud on one occasion, though we do try to avoid that happening!

We will stop and look around us at the delights of the Common.  Brooke Pond is a delight – we look out for the coots across the pond, and we sometimes see a heron searching for something to eat.  Whilst we walk across the Common we look out for all sorts of birds and reptiles.  There are birds aplenty – we have seen sparrowhawks and crows and hidden somewhere in the gorse are some Dartford Warblers, though we haven’t managed to see one yet.  When we have had some evening walks we have been able to hear a nightjar churring away.

Once a month on Tuesdays, you may see a few mums and their babies on the Common, having a good chat and exchanging notes about the joys and pains of parenthood.  The Baby Buggy Walk Group, run by Jeanette, is supported by QE Park Baptist Church - as is “Muddy Boots”.

One mum contacted Jeanette as she wanted to make friends with other new mums, which is exactly the aim of the Group. The mums return to our Café for refreshments after the walk and continue to exchange ideas for baby activities - as well as their mobile contact numbers!

If you would care to join us for either group, we’d love to see you - just email j_j_cattermole@hotmail.com or drop in at QE Park Centre to learn more.
